Why Choose Glass Pool Fencing?

The top reason for choosing glass pool fencing is because it looks so stylish. Some homeowners with small children shy away from it, though, believing because it is glass, it must also be fragile. That's not actually the case, though. Made from tempered glass, it is very hard to break. The glass comes in 8, 10 and 12mm thicknesses and most suppliers and installers recommend 12mm thick glass for pool fencing, to avoid virtually any possibility of breakage. 12mm thick glass is also arguably the safest material you can use for pool fencing because children can't climb over the slippery glass.

Two basic styles of glass pool fencing are available:

• Frameless glass fencing consists of a series of glass panels secured by specially designed "spigots" (ground-mounted brackets).

• Semi-frameless fencing consists of glass panels separated by posts to which the panels are affixed.

Frameless glass pool fencing is very popular, but many installers recommend semi-frameless for use in high-wind areas because the posts help prevent the panels from swaying in wind gusts.

Glass Pool Fencing Installation Costs*

Some fencing materials suppliers sell DIY glass pool fencing kits, so if you're reasonably skilled and follow all directions to the letter, you can save some money by installing your own fence. However, don't rule out getting quotes from glass fence builders. This type of fencing can be installed very quickly because there is so little hardware needed and experienced installers come to your home with everything they need to get the job done quickly and efficiently.

When comparing quotes for glass pool fencing, there are some important things you should do besides comparing prices:

• What thickness of glass is being quoted?
• Does the fencing comply with all Australian standards for pool fencing? It should be a minimum of 1200mm high and gates must swing outwards and be self-latching.
• Is everything included in the quote (panels, hardware, gates, hinges, etc.)?
• Is the installer licensed and insured?
• Does the fencing come with a warranty?
• Does the installer guarantee their workmanship?

Independent fencing installers can charge as little as $48 per square metre for labour, but it's probably better to get quotes for supply and install. Suppliers make much of their profit from the sale of the product and installation is considered an extra service. They know you will be getting comparative quotes, so will tend to keep installation charges as low as possible.
